Every little bit helps. As new parents, you’re no strangers to love, care, and nurturing. You pour your heart and soul into raising your little ones, and that’s something to be proud of! This Thanksgiving, let’s extend that love and care to those who need it most – our neighbors struggling with hunger.
The uncomfortable truth
Hunger is a harsh reality in Canada affecting over 20% of the population. It’s not just a matter of not having enough food, but also a lack of access to nutritious options. As a result, many families are forced to make impossible choices between paying bills or putting food on the table.
The alarming rise of child hunger
As a parent, the thought of your child going hungry is unbearable. Yet, in Canada, 33% of children relying on food banks are under the age of 16. This staggering statistic that should prompt us to act.
- 2.1 million children in Canada live in food-insecure households.
- There were 642,257 visits to food banks by children in March of 2023.
Many food banks across Canada are facing overwhelming demand, and hundreds of thousands more people turned to food banks last year alone.
How can you help?
This Thanksgiving, let’s come together to make a difference. Here are a few ways you can help:
- Donate food to your local food bank: Non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, and rice are always appreciated. You can also consider making a monetary donation to help purchase fresh produce and meat.
- Donate to a food bank; While all contributions of food helps. Food banks also need financial support throughout the year to keep their shelves stocked so they can keep assisting.
- Volunteer your time: Food banks rely on volunteers to sort donations, pack hampers, and distribute food to those in need.
- Spread awareness: Share this post with your friends and family, and let’s start a conversation about hunger in Canada.
